David S. Lee Recognized by Marquis Who's Who

CLOSTER, NJ, October 16, 2023 - David S. "Doo Sam" Lee has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Following the completion of a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Hanyang University, in Seoul, in 1980, Mr. Lee served his mandatory military service as an officer before starting his career in the sales engineering group at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), one of the largest shipbuilders in the world. It was his father's recommendation that inspired Mr. Lee to pursue a career in the shipbuilding industry, and he is grateful for his father's prescient advice, as he has thrived in the field. For nearly 20 years, he contributed significantly to the growth of SHI to its current world leading shipbuilder status. During his tenure at SHI, his forward-looking vision and insights on potential areas ripe for integration and partnership within the market propelled the company as well as the wider shipbuilding industry towards critical innovations.

One of Mr. Lee's most notable accomplishments is his role in spurring the integration of shipbuilding with the offshore oil and gas industry. Previously, these industries were almost completely separate from one another; however, during his tenure as head of SHI's North America office (1995~2000), Mr. Lee saw the opportunities each sector presented to the other and pushed to integrate these two industries in meaningful ways. As a result of his efforts, the company rose to become a world leader in the integration of shipbuilding and offshore businesses as well as a leading turn-key solutions provider for FPSO (floating production, storage, and offloading) vessels and other floating offshore vessels such as drillships and shuttle tankers.

Mr. Lee was also instrumental in the creation of the concept of a drillship, which had not previously existed, and contributed to the development of the first double hull tankers with Conoco, following the major oil spill of Exxon Valdez in 1989. After his time at Samsung Heavy Industries, he joined MJLF & Associates as managing director, where he remained for over 10 years. Since 2013, Mr. Lee has served as the principal of DSL Marine Corp. Over the span of his career, he has gained membership with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Korean Shipbuilders' Association and plans to share his insights and experiences with the next generation through seminar/lectures and publishing a book on the industry in the next five years.
