John T. (Jack Caldwell) Celebrated for Dedication to the Fields of Broadcasting and Communications

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, MI, October 06, 2023 - Jack Caldwell is again included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all recognized factors during the selection process.

While earning a Bachelor of Arts in English and Journalism from the University of Pittsburgh in 1955, Mr. Caldwell edited the University yearbook and was a volunteer in the launch of WQED, America's second public TV station to begin broadcasting. He then completed master's degree coursework in journalism and technology at Michigan State University where he honed his television production experience as a cameraman, lighting designer, director and production manager of WKAR-TV, the University's public television station. In 1962, he was recruited to manage the distribution center of the National Educational Television and Radio Center and was its Vice President. In 1966, Mr. Caldwell then joined WGBH Boston to assist in the launch of its second TV station – Channel 44. He was soon named operations manager of WGBH, and in 1971 he launched and led WGBY-TV in Springfield, MA, a subsidiary of WGBH.

During his tenure with WGBY-TV, and as a member of the PBS BOD, Mr. Caldwell met a member of the PBS BOD and the lay representative of the Detroit Public TV Station, WTVS. She convinced him to utilize his expertise and become president and CEO of WTVS. His installation of a satellite uplink made possible the creation of a weeknight live national PBS program, "Latenight America." A Canadian satellite company selected WTVS's new 24-hour program schedule for delivery of its programming across all of Canada.

Four years later, in 1983, he pivoted from public broadcasting to join Ford Motor Company at its World Headquarters as director of internal communications. He oversaw the creation of the then largest satellite delivered business and news communications network in the U.S. He also led the design and implementation of world-wide videoconferencing. After 12 years at Ford, he joined his business satellite provider, Convergent Media Systems as vice president of business communications planning.

Drawing on years of varied experience, Mr. Caldwell established his strategic communications consultancy business, The Caldwell Company, where he remained until his retirement in 2002.

Outside of his work, Mr. Caldwell has contributed to his community as a member of the board of the Karmanos Cancer Institute, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. In light of his professional achievements, he has been honored many times, earning The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences -Detroit Chapter - Silver Circle Award – "an honor for enduring contributions to the vitality of the television industry." While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in having recruited pioneering, supportive and amazing employees and interns who took the challenge to invent and create public television stations, corporate television networks and to create and deliver unique and meaningful programming. Looking toward the future, Mr. Caldwell aims to drive a new convertible out of the Ford Factory on his 100th birthday. Through it all, he intends to continue to "live life - imagine what isn't – and make it happen." He remains committed to seek opportunities to bring value to the lives of family, friends, others and his community. His signature sign-off is "Every new day is a bonus filled with opportunity."
