HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, OH, October 05, 2023 - Shmaryu M. Shvartsman has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Originally from Moldova, Dr. Shvartsman attended Tomsk State University in Russia, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics in 1971 before earning a doctorate in physics in 1976. After receiving his degrees, he went on to work in academia, first as a professor at his alma mater and then as a visiting professor at the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, one of the largest and oldest research institutes in the country. One of his publications in collaboration with colleagues was considered one of the best publications in 1984. In 1986 Dr. Shvartsman received a Science degree in Theoretical Physics and started as a full Professor at Tomsk Pedagogical State University. During his tenure Dr. Shvartsman has published more than 100 scientific papers in high energy physics, specifically in quantum field theory with unstable vacuum. Dr. Shvartsman co-authored a book published by Springer Verlag in 1991. In 1992 Dr. Shvartsman then immigrated to the United States, where he continued working in high energy physics and was exposed to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) while working as a scientist in the physics department at Case Western Reserve University.
As a result of his time at Case Western, where he worked with a colleague who specialized in MRI, Dr. Shvartsman was encouraged to transition from high-energy physics to magnetic resonance imaging. Thus, he ventured into the realm of MRI research and development. At multiple companies, such as Philips and Hitachi Healthcare Americas, the world's leading pioneer of MRI systems for the health care industry, he worked as a scientist at various levels to develop imaging technology, namely in High Field MRI with 7T magnets. In 2008, Dr. Shvartsman joined ViewRay Inc., a radiation imaging startup company in Cleveland OH, where he stayed on as a fellow scientist for over 12 years, contributing to the integration of MRI with radiation therapy, a technology used by approximately 60 hospitals. The main achievement was shielding the 6MeV linear accelerator from the magnetic field of the main magnet.
Currently, Dr. Shvartsman holds the position of senior research scientist at Fujifilm Healthcare Americas Corporation. As a result of his contributions in designing new MRI systems, focusing on the design of the magnets, gradient coils, and radiofrequency coils, he holds membership with the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), has accrued more than 20 patents in MRI, and has published 30 papers related to MRI technology. In all he has accomplished scientifically, Dr. Shvartsman attributes his success to the mentorship he received over the course of his education and scientific career. Looking ahead, he plans to continue moving forward with his research and focus his efforts on improvements of MRI systems.
