WEST LAFAYETTE, IN, October 04, 2023 - Sherlene Brown has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Brown is a dedicated Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Biochemistry at Purdue University, specializing in enzymology. With a robust background in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, her research is centered around a newly identified Fic protein originating from the respiratory pathogen Bordetella bronchiseptica. Her work delves into protein-substrate interactions and has led to the exciting discovery and biochemical characterization of novel proteins using fluorescence microscopy, bioinformatics, and various in vitro assays. As a Ph.D. candidate, she capably oversees lab inventory management and maintains scrupulous documentation to ensure the safety and compliance of her fellow researchers.
Originally from Jamaica, Ms. Brown harbored a dream of becoming a doctor, which she relentlessly pursued. Guided and supported by her Passport to College (PTC) family, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC. During her undergraduate years, she gained invaluable experience, serving as a research assistant at Claflin University, a research intern at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a summer scholar at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR). These experiences solidified her passion for research and the profound impact it could have on the world. Her extensive knowledge and dedication have resulted in the publication of two peer-reviewed papers, with visuals of protein interactions featured on the cover of the MBoC Journal, and her contribution to a protocol publication titled 'A Co-purification Method for Efficient Production and Src Kinase-mediated Phosphorylation of Aplysia Cortactin.'
Beyond her professional commitments, Ms. Brown actively volunteers in her community, lending her time to organizations such as Opening Minds Through Art (OMA) at Westminster Village, the Purdue University Interdisciplinary Life Science Program (PULSe) Science in Schools Program, and the Greater Faith Child Development Center. Her commitment to staying updated on field advancements is reflected in her alignment with the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and the International Bordetella Society (IBS).
Ms. Brown's remarkable body of work has not gone unnoticed, earning her accolades like the Vertus Hardiman Endowed Scholarship by the United Negro College Fund in 2014 and the top prize in the Undergraduate Research Poster Competition at Claflin University the following year. More recently, she secured first place for the best oral presentation at Bordetella Research Day and was honored with the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Awards by the Life Science Editors Foundation. She also received the NIH Drug Discovery in Infectious Disease T32 Training Grant. While her career is studded with accomplishments, she takes immense pride in her role on the MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP) review committee, where she plays a pivotal role in selecting talented students from underrepresented minorities to join the program—reflecting a deeply rewarding chapter in her journey and her passion for giving back.
Ms. Brown attributes her success to the collaborative efforts and mentorship of those she has worked with as well as the unwavering support of her close-knit family. Their collective influence has ignited the fire within her to dream big and bravely chase those dreams with unwavering determination. Looking ahead, her aspirations include graduating from her doctoral studies and embarking on a career as a research scientist with a biopharmaceutical company or research institute. Ultimately, she envisions becoming an independent researcher overseeing her own laboratory.
