Marquis Who's Who Recognizes Helen Carithers for Success in Education

COLLEGE PARK, GA, September 28, 2023 - Helen Carithers has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Retiring from the classroom after more than 30 years, Ms. Carithers taught numerous courses in science and mathematics at Atlanta Public Schools from 1967 to 2001. During her distinguished tenure, she was the Science and Math Academy chairperson and coordinator at the school district's Benjamin E. Mays High School between 1981 and 2001. In this capacity, Ms. Carithers was instrumental in leading the next generation of leaders, some of whom attended the most prestigious colleges like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and achieved successful careers in law, medicine, and other leading fields. While at May High, she was also involved with the Reserve Officer Training Corps program. Additionally, Ms. Carithers excelled as an independent studies and biology teacher at Southwest Atlanta High from 1967 to 1981.

Active with various civic, nonprofit, and religious organizations throughout her career, Ms. Carithers frequently assisted voter registration groups during voting season, has been involved with Jewels and Partners Senior Citizen Group, and has been active with several reading clubs and community reading programs. She has also donated to the Hope Foundation and Inspire, which provides school bags and equipment to needy students through her church and sorority and, as a parishioner of her church, has assisted with bible study and its Sunday school program. Moreover, Ms. Carithers has been a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Red Hat Society, and the United Methodist Women.

In preparation for her career in education, Ms. Carithers received a Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in chemistry and secondary education from Spelman College in 1966 and a Master of Arts in teaching with a concentration in science and mathematics from Vanderbilt University in 1971. Active in her professional community in retirement, she is a member and past co-president of the Atlanta Retired Educators Association. Ms. Carithers is also a longtime member of the Georgia Educators Association and Alpha Phi Alpha Sorority.

Ms. Carithers was noted for her success in the classroom with several Teacher of the Year recognitions during her tenure. She also received over 30 plaques and was honored to receive numerous yearbook dedications from Southwest High School and Benjamin May High School. For her community contributions, Ms. Carithers received accolades for hosting educational workshops and her commitment to working with her local community. Additionally, Ms. Carithers received an Outstanding Achievement Award from Jewels and Partners Senior Citizen Group.
