Beth D. Tuckwiller, PhD Celebrated for Dedication to the Fields of Psychology and Special Education

HERNDON, VA, September 22, 2023 - Beth Tuckwiller has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Backed by years of professional expertise in education, psychology, and research, Dr. Tuckwiller presently excels as an Associate Professor of Special Education and Disability Studies at the George Washington University. In addition to teaching graduate classes, she prepares doctoral students to become researchers and conducts her own research on factors related to school-based well-being for teachers and students, which was recently funded by the Spencer Foundation. Additionally, Dr. Tuckwiller leads community-engaged projects focused on increasing equitable learning, developmental, and post-high school opportunities for students with disabilities and other marginalized identities. She is a prolific author and presenter and has published numerous articles in journals across diverse disciplines and presented at conferences and convenings around the globe.

Before obtaining her current position, Dr. Tuckwiller gained valuable expertise in the field as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Florida State College at Jacksonville and as a postdoctoral research scientist at the University of Virginia. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Virginia Tech and a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Radford University. Subsequently, Dr. Tuckwiller expanded upon her professional knowledge by earning a PhD in Special Education from the University of Virginia. Driven to remain abreast of ongoing changes across both of her disciplines, she aligns herself with the American Educational Research Association and the American Psychological Association. Prior to her career in the academy, she was a special education teacher for high school students with emotional, behavioral, and learning differences and a preschool teacher.

In conjunction with her work, Dr. Tuckwiller contributes to her community through local volunteerism at family emergency housing and employment transitional programs, and internationally through support to child-focused initiatives including the UNICEF Clean Water Initiative and Sole Hope. She is also active in environmental clean-up and protection initiatives focused on the Chesapeake Bay.

While her career has been filled with achievements, she is most grateful for the opportunity to infuse an ethic of care throughout her professional and personal endeavors. Across a decade of well-being related research, she has discovered that the concept of "support" that teachers and students need to thrive – a concept that can seem vague and elusive – is often best understood as "care:" care for one another, care for the community, and prioritizing care for others as a community value. She aims to model such care in her mentoring of doctoral students, her research agenda, and her community contributions. She credits the authenticity of the teachers and students she has had the honor of working with throughout her career for bringing this understanding to light and aims to be a catalyst for care-based educational reform in schools. She also credits her father, a brilliant musician with a steadfast work ethic driven by care, and her desire to leave the world a better place for her two daughters. In the coming years, Dr. Tuckwiller aims to pursue more work in care-based education and publish a book in the field.
