Focusing her efforts on developing and implementing strategic energy management initiatives, she primarily serves clients in New York State as a lobbying consultancy.
Catherine Luthin is viewed as a pioneer in energy procurement, management, and sustainability, with over 30 years of industry experience within corporate, nonprofit and regulatory environments. She is the Founder and former President of Luthin Associates, a leading energy management consulting firm that helped public and private sector clients develop and implement proactive energy strategies, better source energy, operate more efficiently, integrate renewable energies and achieve significant cost savings. With extensive experience in the education, healthcare and real estate sectors, Luthin Associates helped to drive more than $500 million in savings for its clients.
Luthin Associates, along with Wildan Engineering, managed the commercial outreach program for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, a public-benefit corporation focused on combatting climate change, increasing energy storage and achieving carbon neutrality. Under their combined leadership, outreach efforts resulted in the submission of one thousand and seventy-two (1,072) applications with estimated incentives of $131,047,419 across all programs and estimated savings of 480,067,706 kWh and 780,788 MMBTU to the Existing Facilities Program and 70.5 MW demand reduction within the Demand Management Program.
From 2002 to 2022, Luthin served as the Founder and Executive Director of Consumer Power Advocates (CPA), which helped large, institutional nonprofits in the education and health sectors decrease energy costs through regulatory affairs and programs that shaped energy policies in New York State.
Leadership
Luthin's leadership and expertise helped to spark change in the energy industry in New York for several decades. She served on former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Energy Policy Task Force for all three terms of his administration. Catherine was one of 16 leading energy experts from the private, public and nonprofit sectors who developed the original PlaNYC. Ms. Luthin helped with long-term planning and energy sustainability and participated in Mayor DeBlasio's Energy Supply Focus Group to craft New York's 80 x 50 climate action plan, with a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80 percent by 2050. She also co-authored the distribution generation section of PlaNYC, a strategic plan released by Mayor Bloomberg in 2007 to prepare the city for growth and work toward the vision of a greener, greater New York.
Prior to her current role, Ms. Luthin began her career as a senior financial analyst for the New York City Human Resources Administration's Office of Financial Management in 1988. Following this time, she was a program manager for the City of New York Department of General Services in the Office of Energy Conservation in 1992 until taking a role as the executive director of the New York Energy Buyers Forum in 1995.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Luthin earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing in 1979 and a Master of Business Administration in the same field of study in 1982, both from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Looking to the future, she intends to remain active within the field of energy policy. She is committed to mentoring young individuals in her field, encouraging and guiding them towards success in their career paths.
Among her professional accomplishments Ms. Luthin has received numerous awards which include some of the following. Catherine was named Energy Service Professional of the Year for the State of New York by the AEE-NY Chapter in 2002 and International Professional of the Year by The Association of Energy Engineers in 2004. In 2014, she was listed as one of the Top Women in Commercial Real Estate by Sokol Media and was on the Top 25 New Jersey Leading Woman Entrepreneurs list in 2015. She also was honored with a Women in Sustainability Leadership Award by gb&d magazine in 2017. Additionally, in 2021, she was one of the Top 100 Women Leaders of New Jersey by Women We Admire. Added to these, she was admitted as a fellow to The Association of Energy Engineers in 2019 and inducted to the Energy Managers Hall of Fame by The Association of Energy Engineers in 2022.
