Backed by years of professional experience in public health, vector control, program management, and more, Mr. Were presently serves as the vector-borne diseases lead and senior principal technical adviser for Management Sciences for Health. Prior to obtaining his current role, he worked for Abt Associates as director of vector control for the USAID-funded PMI VectorLink Project. In this capacity, he planned and implemented vector control activities in 25 countries. Likewise, Mr. Were worked for Abt Associates as a principal associate and director of operations for the PMI Africa Indoor Residual Spraying (PMI AIRS) Project and as the deputy chief of party for the Uganda IRS Project.
During the early stages of his career, Mr. Were gained valuable expertise in technical support, branding, sales, marketing, and more through Unilever, the Academy for Educational Development, and Uganda Post Limited. An expert in his field, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Makerere University in 1995. Subsequently, Mr. Were expanded upon his professional knowledge by earning a master's degree in public health leadership from Uganda Christian University.
In light of his professional achievements, Mr. Were won two Innovation Awards in 2014 and 2021. While his career has been filled with standout moments, he takes the most pride in leading innovations that paved the way for more affordable vector control. In this capacity, he created a comprehensive training curriculum for vector control through indoor residual spraying and instructed public health specialists in disease-burdened countries in Africa and Central America regarding the program's implementation. Mr. Were is a member of the WHO expert committee on vector control application equipment. He also serves as work stream lead on the WHO Roll Back Malaria Vector Control Working Group. The cornerstone of his success lies in his commitment to uplifting others, his parents, who gave him a wonderful foundation, and the support of his wife and three daughters. In the coming years, Mr. Were intends to empower developing nations to implement malaria and other vector-borne disease prevention and management efforts sustainably.
