ALEXANDRIA, VA, June 15, 2023 - Paul A. Marshall has been included in Marquis Who's Who. An overseas research fellow for the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa, an exploration geologist in the Canadian Arctic and a firefighter in the forests of Canada, Dr. Marshall has earned distinction as the Jerry and Susie Wilson Distinguished Professor of Religious Freedom at Baylor University. He is also a senior fellow and head of the South and Southeast Asian action team at the Religious Freedom Institute, and senior fellow at the Hudson Institute's Center for Religious Freedom. Since 2020, he has focused his efforts on researching, writing and speaking on religion freedom. He has spoken on religious freedom, international relations and radical Islam before Congress and the State Department in the United States and in many other nations.
Dr. Marshall is Chairman of the Board of the Institute for Religion and Democracy, Vice-Chair of the Media Project, has been a board member for the Institute for Global Engagement and is a research professor with the Baylor University department of political science. He has served as a visiting professor for the Graduate School of Sharif Hidayatullah Islamic University in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Satya Wacana University in Salatiga, Indonesia. After moving to the U.S. from Canada in 1998 he was for ten years a senior fellow of the Freedom House in 1998.
Over the course of his outstanding career, Dr. Marshall has contributed hundreds of articles to the field and has been interviewed on ABC, CNN, PBS, Al Jazeera and many other international media outlets. Added to these, he has written and edited more than 20 books on religion and politics with a focus on religious freedom. He co-authored "Persecuted: The Global Assault on Christians" in 2013 and "Silenced: How Apostasy and Blasphemy Codes Are Choking Freedom Worldwide" in 2011. His work "Blind Spot: When Journalists Don't Get Religion" was named Book of the Year by the Religious Communication Association in 2009 and won the Wilbur Prize from the Religious Communicators' Council the same year. He also wrote the best-selling, award-winning survey of religious persecution "Their Blood Cries Out'' in 1997 along with numerous other works across the years. He strives to combine real research on scholarships with moving people to action, ending his books with recommendations for such action.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Marshall earned a Bachelor of Science in geology from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and a Master of Science in the same field of study from the University of Western Ontario in 1972. Following these achievements, he attained a Master of Arts in 1975 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1979, both in political philosophy from York University in Canada. He subsequently gained a Master of Philosophy in 1980 and completed further studies in international human rights law at the University of Strasbourg and theology and jurisprudence at Oxford University.
Within the coming years, Dr. Marshall intends to write a book on the religious dimension of Indonesia as well as update two books he wrote previously, "Heaven is Not My Home: Learning to Live in God's Creation" and "God and the Constitution: Christianity and American Politics."
