In this capacity, he leads a team in extensibility improvement in OpenSearch. Prior to obtaining his current role, Mr. Widdis worked in a similar position at Microsoft, where he led the implementation of a first-class data pipeline, and as a senior operations research analyst with Amazon.
During the early stages of his career, Mr. Widdis gained valuable expertise in operations research and applied systems analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School's Department of Operations Research, applying it to defense research at Concurrent Technologies Corporation. Likewise, he has dedicated himself to his country through the military, serving 20 years as submarine officer in the U.S. Navy. His assignments included a combat tour managing the employment of Counter-IED systems, multiple postings on Strike group staffs managing the assigned submarines, an operations officer for Submarine Development Squadron FIVE, a chief engineering officer on the U.S.S. Topeka, and as an operations officer and division officer on the U.S.S. Sturgeon.
Alongside his work, Mr. Widdis contributes to his community, volunteering with the Sons of the American Revolution and previously serving as working group chair and adviser for the Military Operations Research Society, where he served between 2009 and 2016. An expert in his field, he holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the United States Naval Academy. Subsequently, Mr. Widdis expanded upon his professional knowledge, earning a master's degree in operations research through the Naval Postgraduate School and becoming a certified modeling and simulation professional through the National Training and Simulation Association. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in transitioning from his military and analytics background to becoming a senior software engineer without any formal training, building a popular open source software library and mentoring others to follow in his footsteps.
