STERLING HEIGHTS, MI, June 14, 2023 - Weam Namou has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A seasoned nonprofit executive with years of professional expertise under her belt, Ms. Namou presently excels as the executive director of the Chaldean Cultural Center and as an ambassador for the Detroit chapter of the Authors Guild of America. Similarly, she is founder and president of Unique Voices in Films. Over the years, Ms. Namou gained valuable expertise with Detroit Working Writers, Metro Detroit Book and Author Society, the Iraqi Artists Association, which she co-founded, and as a public and keynote speaker at numerous institutions such as Madonna University, Oakland University, Wayne State University, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Iraqi Human Rights Organization, and many others.
To date, Ms. Namou has written 15 books and produced and directed two feature films; a documentary and a narrative feature. After her first book, The Feminine Art, came out, she was asked to write articles for The Chaldean News. Her books vary in genres from fiction, nonfiction, memoir, and poetry, but they all share the Iraqi American experience with focus on her Chaldean culture which dates back thousands of years, of which her people still speak the Aramaic language. Her books and films attempt to provide an authentic representation of Middle Easterners, particularly women, who are often stereotyped by the West. When in 2014 ISIS began targeting religious minorities in Iraq, her desire to learn more about her heritage grew and her passion for writing increased. Subsequently, Ms. Namou became prolific in her career.
Due to her vast breadth of knowledge and passion for her culture, Ms. Namou also produced and hosted a weekly cable show on CMN TV. She wrote, produced, and directed The Great American Family and Pomegranate. She lent her expertise to several publications such as the St. Clair Shore Times, Gazette van Detroit, The Chaldean News, and many other national and international publications. Outside of her work, she enjoys her role as a wife and mother of two teenage children and a dog. She contributes to those less fortunate by sponsoring a child in Guatemala through Children International. She is also helping an inmate of black and Polish background write and publish a book from prison.
An expert in her field, Ms. Namou earned a bachelor's degree in Speech Communication from Wayne State University, graduated from the Motion Picture Institute (a one-year film school), studied novel and memoir writing through several correspondence courses, and attended a poetry summer program in Prague via the University of New Orleans.
Her outstanding work gained her numerous awards from all over the world, including the United States, India, and France: Eric Hoffer Book Award, IndieFEST International Film Award, ImpactDOCS International Film Awards, Filmzen International Film Competition, Poombukar Independent Film Festival, and others. She has been honored with certificates from Arab World Books, the United States Army, and presented with an Outstanding Contributions to the Arts trophy.
