BERKELEY, CA, May 30, 2023 - Luoping Zhang, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Leveraging more than three decades of excellence in toxicology, genotoxicity and molecular epidemiology, Dr. Zhang has earned distinction as a professor in research with the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health. Since 1992, she has focused her efforts on conducting research in chemically induced carcinogenesis while teaching invited lectures, including biomarkers, genotoxicity, and multiple case studies. She also designed courses on practical toxicology and health risk assessment. With a background in chemistry, her research indicated many toxic chemicals can lead to cancer and/or chronic diseases. To better understand it, she incorporates her studies of toxicology and genomics into her mechanistic research on how chemical exposure causes human cancers.
Over the course of her career, she has also contributed her own research to the field, including "Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention: a cosponsored publication by the American Association for Cancer Research". To date, she has published about 200 scientific papers in many prestigious journals, such as Science, PNAS, The Lancet, nine book chapters, and a solo-authored book. Outside of her primary career efforts, Dr. Zhang is a valued member of the Society of Toxicology (SOT), the Northern California Society of Toxicology (NorCal SOT), and the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society (EMGS). She also contributes her scientific knowledge by serving as an expert of the Working Group of WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and as a committee member for US EPA and National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).
Dr. Zhang began her career as a visiting scientist in Italy with the University of Perugia in 1987 and the University of Padova in 1989. Most recently, she has also been honored with a U.S. Fulbright Scholarship Award and served as a visiting professor lecturing a specially designed course called "Carcinogens, Carcinogenesis and Cancer" at the University of Udine, Italy in 2022. Additionally, Dr. Zhang has been elected as a fellow to Collegium Ramazzini in Italy since 2019.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Zhang is proud to have been named an Honored Professor by the College of Life Science and Technology of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China in 2000. She earned a Bachelor of Science in physical chemistry from Wuhan University in China in 1982. Following this achievement, she attained a Master of Science in biochemistry from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1985. She finally gained a Doctor of Philosophy in biomedical toxicology from Simon Fraser University in 1993. Within the coming years, Dr. Zhang intends to continue serving as a scientist and researcher, educating more students globally about environmental and occupational exposures related to cancer development in humans.
