MOUNT VERNON, OH, May 19, 2023 - Erica H. Young has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Leveraging more than a decade of excellence in serving those impacted by drug and mental health issues throughout Ohio, Ms. Young has earned distinction as an Assistant Public Defender with the Knox County Public Defender. Since 2022, she has focused her efforts on engaging in felony trial practice. Her private practice focuses on representing individuals before the Ohio Parole Board and the Ohio Adult Parole Authority. She treats each client with empathy, honoring their stories and helping them to use their experiences to inspire others. Additionally, she is a valued member of the Knox County Bar Association, the Ohio Association for Justice, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the National Association of Professional Women.
Prior to her current role, Ms. Young began her career as a law clerk and legal assistant for Portman, Foley and Flint, LLP and was a senior academic fellow with the Capital University Law School in 2010. Following this period, she was a legal intern with the Wrongful Conviction Project of the Office of the Ohio Public Defender in 2011 and was a law clerk for W. Joseph Edwards, Attorney at Law the same year. In 2012, she became a law clerk and associate in waiting for Portman and Foley LLP, earning a promotion to an attorney in 2013 when she was admitted to the Ohio Bar.
Ms. Young continued her career as the owner of her own firm, Erica H. Young, Attorney at Law from 2015 until 2018. During this time, she also lent her expertise as a case manager for Access Ohio and the YMCA in 2017 until taking a role as an attorney for Prison Legal Services with the Office of the Ohio Public Defender in 2018. In 2020, Ms. Young was promoted to Supervising Attorney for Prison Legal Services where she supervised a staff of six attorneys. Among her professional accomplishments, she is proud to have been named as one of the Lawyers of Distinction in 2023. She was also admitted as a fellow to the Ohio State Bar Foundation in 2018 and remains in good standing.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Young earned a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Ethnic and American Studies from The Ohio State University in 2007. Following this achievement, she attained a Juris Doctor from Capital University Law School in 2012 and completed coursework for a Master of Social Work from The Ohio State University in 2018. Well-qualified in her field, she is a certified guardian ad litem with the Supreme Court of Ohio. Within the coming years, Ms. Young intends to continue her work helping others to move forward through traumatic experiences and assisting justice-involved individuals return to society.
