Marquis Who's Who Selects Sounak Ghosh Roy, PhD, for Contributions to Biology

SILVER SPRING, MD, April 24, 2023 - Sounak Ghosh Roy, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Ghosh Roy is a respected biologist who joined the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine Inc. in Fall 2022. In his capacity as Scientist-I at the Agile Vaccines and Therapeutics Department (Infectious Diseases Directorate), he is supporting the efforts of the Naval Medical Research Center (Silver Spring, Maryland) in studying emerging viruses. Dr. Ghosh Roy also conducts stem cell research, designs, and tests animal models, which, he notes, are essential in investigating emerging viruses and human diseases. Looking toward the future, Dr. Ghosh Roy plans to continue working on antiviral vaccines. He hopes the Naval Medical Research Center research can serve as a model to address many diseases, not just viruses.

Among his most notable achievements in the past, Dr. Ghosh Roy was instrumental in establishing a link between dengue and Zika infection and two specific signaling pathways called autophagy and unfolded protein response. He performed these studies during his PhD at the City University of New York, under the able mentorship of Dr. Zahra Zakeri. Besides conducting research and scientific writing/analysis, Dr. Ghosh Roy served as an undergraduate mentor in the Zakeri Laboratory at the City University of New York (CUNY) and as a teaching assistant and adjunct faculty in the department of biology at Queens College from 2012 to 2018 where he taught Developmental Biology, Biochemistry, and Biology to non-biology majors.

After having obtained his PhD in 2018, Dr. Ghosh Roy moved to the Yale School of Medicine where he was a postdoctoral fellow until 2022. Under the mentorship of Dr. Whitney Besse, he was involved in the investigation of the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying polycystic kidney diseases. It is at this stage of his career that he obtained extensive exposure to the use of transgenic mouse models in delineating the mechanisms of human genetic disorders.

As a researcher, Dr. Ghosh Roy has disseminated his findings in various peer-reviewed articles, manuscripts, and book chapters. He is also serving as a guest associate editor for Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, and a special edition of JoVE Methods Collections.

Giving back to the community, Dr. Ghosh Roy has volunteered and donated to several polycystic kidney disease drives at Yale University School of Medicine. He is also a member of the symposium committee of the Yale Postdoctoral Association. Dr. Ghosh Roy formerly served as a STEM-U mentor of The Global STEM Alliance; a New York Academy of Sciences subsidiary devoted to increasing the diversity of students involved in STEM.

Highly educated in his respected field, Dr. Ghosh Roy received a Bachelor of Science in microbiology, with honors, at the University of Calcutta in 2007. He subsequently studied at CUNY, receiving a Master of Philosophy and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry in 2013 and 2018, respectively. During his doctoral studies, Dr. Ghosh Roy was engaged in research involving tropical viruses, most importantly dengue, and studies on the Zika virus.

Dr. Ghosh Roy is a member of several industry-related organizations, including the American Society of Nephrology and the International Cell Death Society. He notably received a science scholarship and research grant during his doctoral studies at CUNY. He also won a Second Prize at a 2013 International Cell Death Society meeting and a Teaching and Learning Prize at the Third Annual Yale Postdoc Symposium in 2020.
