SAN DIEGO, CA, April 21, 2023 - Youn Jin Kim, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. For more than 15 years, Dr. Kim has specialized in color science and image processing. Having recently joined Apple in Cupertino, California, in 2021 as a senior color imaging scientist, he has been involved in improving the quality of phone and television screens. Dr. Kim has also been responsible for collaborating with colleagues to incubate new ideas and convert them into working prototypes.

Dr. Kim began his career in the industry in 2008 as a senior engineer at Samsung Electronics in South Korea. During the eight years the technology company employed him, he was instrumental in developing ultra-high definition television products and created a successful platform for evaluating and enhancing picture quality. This platform was published in several professional papers, through which he and his team were recognized for their achievements. Dr. Kim subsequently became an image quality expert at Huawei in China from 2015 to 2018, a freelancing technology consultant in Seoul, South Korea, between 2018 and 2019, the director of image quality and algorithm at Xiaomi Technology in Beijing from 2019 to 2021, and the chief research engineer at LG Electronics in Seoul in 2021. While employed by Huawei and Xiaomi Technology, Dr. Kim was vital to the smartphone industry for creating numerous picture quality improvement solutions, leveraging their competition with Apple and Samsung.

As a co-author, Dr. Kim has contributed several professional publications on various relative topics to his field, including in the Journal of the Optical Society of America A. He also contributed a chapter in the 2011 book "Portable LCD Image Quality: Effects of Surround Luminance in Liquid Crystal Display."

Highly educated in his respective field, Dr. Kim initially earned a Bachelor of Science in physics at Daejin University in Korea in 2003. He also received a Master of Science in imaging science, with distinction, at the University of Derby in England in 2004 and a Doctor of Philosophy in color science at the University of Leeds in England in 2008. Dr. Kim has held machine learning and deep learning credentials through Coursera since 2021 and 2022, respectively.

To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Kim is an applied vision subcommittee member of the Society for Information Display. He is also a member of Imaging Science and Technology and has been active on various professional and technical committees, including for the International Commission on Illumination.

Recognizing his accomplishments, Dr. Kim was a two-time recipient of a Palmer Award from the Color Group London in 2005 and 2007. He also received an Outstanding Paper Award at the 31st International Congress on Imaging Sciences Conference in 2010 and a Young Scientist Encouragement Award from the Optical Society of Japan in 2010.
