Dr. Tejada is a well-known musician and music professor who has taught courses at Fayetteville Technical Community College in Fayetteville, North Carolina, since 2019. He was recruited from Tarleton State University in Texas where he spent three years as assistant professor of music business. Grateful for the opportunity to transition from his career in the music industry to academia, Dr. Tejada enjoys helping the younger generation succeed. As a virtuoso bass instrumentalist, he also relishes educating students and believes that music theory should run through their fingers while playing, rather than be a mental exercise.
As a musician, Dr. Tejada found success as a supervisor and coordinator for the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West commercial rock band "Mobility" from 2013 to 2016. Leveraging his expertise, he managed approximately 80 annual performances throughout seven U.S. states. He also oversaw stage movement, audio, video, and DAW background tracks. Dr. Tejada's contributions led to the band opening for Grammy-nominated American rock band Smash Mouth. He served in the same roles for the U.S. Air Force Reserves' Reserve Generation Commercial Music Ensemble between 2004 and 2013, averaging more than 100 performances yearly. The ensemble also achieved a live viewing of more than 10 million and was broadcast on media throughout more than 170 countries, reaching more than 45 million viewers. The ensemble's artists collaborations included such famous musical artists as Wynonna Judd, Kelly Clarkson, Brad Paisley, Sandi Patty and Take 6, among many others.
Throughout his professional career with the Band of the Golden West and the Reserve Generation, Dr. Tejada was fortunate to tour internationally with several music celebrities as part of the 'Tour for the Troops' initiative, including Kid Rock and the band Daughtry. He also was a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve band that created history by becoming the first Emmy-nominated military band for their television program entitled 'Holiday Notes from Home.' The performance was aired nationally on BET and CMT featuring Amy Grant, Wynonna Judd, and several other artists. Among other musical accomplishments, Dr. Tejada directed Latin bands including performances with legendary salsa artist Jerry Rivas, the lead singer for 'El Gran Combo' honoring his Puerto Rican roots.
Dr. Tejada graduated from James Monroe High School in New York. During his junior year, he began playing the bass guitar, following his elder brother's lead. He was subsequently accepted to the Berklee College of Music and studied on campus for approximately a year. He then earned a Bachelor of Music at Ottawa University and a Master of Music in performance from Wichita State University. Continuing his studies, Dr. Tejada received a Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Performance at the University of Miami. Adding to his expertise, he earned a Master's Certificate in Music Production and Technology through the Berklee College of Music. To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Tejada is a member of the College Society of Music, the Jazz Education Network and the International Society of Bassists.
Highlighting his achievements, Dr. Tejada attributes his success as a musician to understanding his audience and advocating for the values of the communities for whom he performs.
