Deepest Sympathies to the Hastings family

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - April 10, 2021 - Dear Members of the Hastings Family,

It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of Representative Alcee L. Hastings on April 6, 2021. Rep. Hastings was a powerful figure for Florida whose commitment to civil rights and racial justice helped build our nation into one that honors the ideals it was founded upon.

I knew Representative Hastings as a pillar of our state, a groundbreaking and fearless leader who broke down barriers when I fought alongside of him for the people of Florida's 20th District, as his opponent during the 2020 congressional elections. The impact of his steadfast advocacy for our communities in Congress and his commitment to addressing international issues on the Helsinki Commission will reverberate across the world for years to come.

I join the entire southeast Florida community in mourning the loss of civil rights lawyer, Florida's first Black federal judge, Rep. Alcee L. Hastings. Our nation is deeply grateful for the immense contributions he has made to it, and he remains an inspiration to all who wish to fight injustice everywhere. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.

Sincerely,

Sheila Cherfilus McCormick
