Detroit therapist spreads cheer with 365-day Facebook singalong

April 02, 2021 - World-renown counselor, author, speaker, and humanitarian Dr. Sabrina Black has begun a unique campaign to bring a spark of joy to people around the world during the Covid-19 pandemic. At the end of each day, she takes to Facebook with a live video called Sing-along with Sabrina, where she invites the audience to sing popular songs and old standards along with her.

As a mental health practitioner, Dr. Black knows the importance of doing self-care and having healthy diversions from the heaviness of daily living -- especially when so many of us are dealing with pandemic fatigue and isolation. During the day she helps individuals process their past trauma, address present trials, work through painful situations, and deal with issues such as depression, anxiety, marital conflicts, grief and loss, and more.

“Though I’ve adapted my professional life with Zoom sessions and have kept myself busy writing book projects, recording podcasts, and creating some new video series, I’ve made a point to create a self-care routine. At night when I wind down and take time for myself and my family, I play games, do puzzles, read books, watch movies, and sing songs,” says Dr. Black.

“I decided that I am going to stop at the end of every day and sing a song. Just something to remind me that there’s still so much love in the world and always something to sing about. It is my plan to sing 365 days this year and I would love to have others join me on every one of those days. You can submit a song request and even invite your family and friends to sing along as well. https://www.facebook.com/sabrina.d.black.3/

Dr. Black began the year in January with songs of love, peace, unity and harmony. During February, she sang love songs, and March featured songs with a woman’s name in the title. April will be filled with songs of faith. She is singing all genres of music: country, pop, R&B, rock, contemporary, Motown sound, doo wop, and jazz. Dr. Black’s audience keeps growing as people tune in to sing along from as close as Canada and London, England to as far away as Mongolia, Asia and places in Africa like Tanzania, Liberia, Kenya and Uganda.

Research has shown that there is great therapeutic value in singing. It releases endorphins which are feel-good chemicals in the brain that uplift your spirits. Singing is a quick way to hack into happiness because it is a natural antidepressant, reducing stress levels and improving mental wellness and alertness -- something we can all benefit from during these difficult times. You can join Dr. Sabrina Black every night at 11:55pm EST as she sings from her page on Facebook Live and helps LOVE become contagious.
