Dr. Artika Tyner's Children's Books Provide a Foundation for Future Leaders

ST. PAUL, Minn. - March 20, 2021 - It's imperative that children understand history if they are to lead future social change. Dr. Artika Tyner has contributed three books toward that purpose as part of The Fight for Black Rights (Alternator Books®). The children's books represent a timely and relevant series that focuses on the history of racial injustice and how to build a more just and equitable society.

"As a lifelong educator, I am committed to training the next generation of leaders," said Tyner. "It is critically important that they have an understanding of our history in order not to repeat the mistakes of our past. Our youth leaders also need the tools to reimagine and redefine our future by making racial justice come alive."

Published by Lerner Books, the series is written for children ages 8-12 in grade levels 3-6 and books are illustrated with real-life images from events throughout history. The books provide historical context and the relationship to the headlines, newscasts, videos, and social media posts that youth are seeing today. The books are available at the Planting People Growing Justice Bookstore.

"Black Lives Matter: From Hashtag to the Streets" explains what the Black Lives Matter movement is and why it's more than just a catchy slogan. Youth learn how it became a worldwide movement, why people are demonstrating about police brutality, and how the ongoing struggle for equality and racial justice can change the world.

"Vigilante Danger: A Threat to Black Lives," explores how vigilante groups and sanctioned organizations have been a threat to Black lives since the nation's inception. The racially-motivated groups have created untold anguish and devastation to families. Children will learn how individuals continue to work to protect Black lives from violence.

Tyner talks candidly in "Black Voter Suppression: The Fight for the Right to Vote" about past efforts to disenfranchise Black voters and forces that continue to suppress and prevent Black voices from counting at the ballot box. She also discusses the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

"My goal is to inspire others with the books and use them as key teaching and learning tools. This will aid in training and equipping the next generation of leaders, organizers, and change agents," said Tyner.

Tyner's books provide youth with an understanding of the past and how it directly relates to the events and efforts taking place today. Written in an age-appropriate manner, Tyner educates, highlights the accomplishments of African-Americans throughout history, and provides a foundation for the leaders of tomorrow.
