January 30, 2021 - With the United States re-entering the Paris Climate Agreement – a legally binding agreement between 126 nations, dedicated to slowing climate change, and directors of resiliency being added to government staff, there is a nation-wide commitment to having a cleaner, healthier planet. This commitment is shared by Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization, located in downtown Clearwater.
Scientology’s international religious retreat has long been committed to environmentally-friendly initiatives.
In the Way to Happiness, Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote “The idea that one has a share in the planet and that one can and should help care for it may seem very large and, to some, quite beyond reality. But today what happens on the other side of the world, even so far away, can effect what happens in your own home.”
“To that end, here at Flag we continually work on how to be more energy efficient and to decrease our carbon footprint,” said Lisa Mansell, the Public Affairs Director for the Church.
Ms. Mansell sites some of the actions that Flag has taken over the years to be more environmentally friendly.
“Our Central Energy Plant, which provides hot and cold water for the heating and air conditioning systems, kitchen and bathroom facilities for both the Flag Building and the Fort Harrison uses cogeneration – meaning that power and heat are simultaneously generated. This limits carbon emissions and increases energy efficiency. That facility alone cuts 1,690 tons of carbon from the air annually – that is the equivalent of the carbon produced by burning 1.8 million pounds of coal.”
Other actions taken by the staff at the Church include:
• 145,000 cubic feet of cardboard recycled every year
• 7.8 million gallons of water saved every year due to the Flag retreats’ ‘Green Linen’ program
• Use of carpet made from recycled plastic bottles
• Use of energy-efficient lighting which reduces greenhouse gas emissions
“We have created a presentation that outlines all of the initiatives,” said Ms. Mansell. “To learn the details about our green initiatives, visitors are welcome to stop by the Scientology Information Center to find out more.”
