Israeli paratrooper brings grit and valor to the poker table

Up-and-coming 24-year-old Tal Herzog takes 2nd spot and close to $1 million in prize money at the World Series of Poker Winter Online Circuit

Tal Herzog scooped up $923,000 million in prize money this week as the 24-year-old up-and-coming Israeli, who goes by the moniker ‘Turkey1,’ claimed second place at the WSOPC #18: $1,700 Main event $10 Million GTD, behind Lithuania’s Paulius Plausinaitis.

A former paratrooper, Herzog credits his bold style of play to his military service. “Service in the Paratroopers Brigade gave me the discipline and the mental resilience that is so important in poker, and the ability to take the gambits I take in my game,” says Herzog, who spent three years in the elite brigade. Since completing his compulsory military service, Herzog has managed to study psychology, is close to graduating in Business Administration, and recently became professional manager of the soon-to-be-launched theAcademy.Poker.

In addition to the steel he developed in his military service, Herzog also puts his meteoric rise down to the work he put into developing poker courses for the Academy where he was forced to dissect strategy and tactics to make the inner workings of the game accessible to amateurs.

“My work on the Academy courses forced me to rethink poker strategy and tactics to create lessons for less experienced players. That made me a much better player in a concise time,” says Herzog. As for how he feels about his million-dollar earnings, Herzog says: “Just fine.

It’s an incredible feeling to see all the hard work pay off. Thanks to the prize money, Herzog joins a list of 10 Israeli poker players with over $1 million in career earnings.

TheAcademy.Poker will start operating its online courses later this year and will deliver classes suitable for a millennial audience with an emphasis on dynamic and visual content, providing insights into all aspects of the game, giving players the tools to “play like a pro”.

Baruch Toledano, co-founder and CEO of the academy. Poker explains that as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, poker tournaments have transitioned online, leading to major changes in the way the game is played and a shake-up of the world rankings. “All the elements of game psychology, of reading your opponents’ body language, have been eliminated online and this has allowed younger players to take over the table. The online game is more aggressive and skills-oriented, and the courses that we will provide at the Academy will be focused on the online game and will give our students the edge.”

Based on the philosophy that poker is a game of skill, not luck, courses at the Academy of Poker will focus on the fundamentals of the game and tips and tricks from pro-players. Among the topics covered at the academy: Poker Fundamentals, how to choose the most profitable tables, correct bankroll management, pre-flop strategy, post-flop strategy, poker psychology, advance strategy, and more. TheAcademy.Poker will be available online in English and ten other languages.
