The hot drink of summer is cold

BRISBANE, Australia - Jan. 12, 2021 - A sweltering summer has seen Queenslanders ditch cappuccinos for iced lattes, with coffee icon Merlo Coffee reporting a super spike in the sale of cold coffee.

Dean Merlo, founder of Merlo Coffee, said while hot coffee was still the most popular order, this year as temperatures headed toward 40 degrees, there had been a real swing towards a cold brew.

"Some people, like me, can't live without their Mezzo Mezzo or long black in the morning, but as Queensland turns up the heat, we see people making the switch to cold coffee," Mr Merlo said.

"Iced lattes are always really popular, as is our Black Diamond, which is an iced long black made over ice with sparkling water."

In an average week, cold coffee is now consumed by 1.1 million Australians, equating to 5.6% of the population[1].

Mr Merlo said cold coffee had come a long way from the sugar-laden iced coffee drinks of the past.

"Traditionally when we think about iced coffee, we picture tall glasses filled with ice cream and cream – it was more about the add-ons then the coffee," Mr Merlo said.

"Nowadays, unsweetened iced coffee varieties are hugely popular, and give people the option of enjoying a good quality cold coffee over summer, without the extra calories."

Mr Merlo said the secret to a good cold coffee was all in the beans.

"For an iced latte, an espresso blend is perfect, but if you prefer it straight up, try our Bean of the Month blends - you can really get a taste of some unique flavours, and you might just find a new favourite coffee!"
