'Inspirational Hero' to undergo complimentary skin removal surgery

BELLEVUE, Wash. - Dec. 7, 2020 - The date is set. On February 25, 2021, 28-year-old Kayla Kelley will part ways with pounds of excess stomach skin that are the trophy of a two-year successful journey to lose 136 lbs. Athenix Body Sculpting Institute, the largest plastic surgery group on the West Coast, will be donating their services and performing a 360-degree tummy tuck; the operating surgeon will be the renowned Dr. Gavin Dry.

Kayla Kelley was selected among thousands of women by Athenix Body Sculpting Institute through their #AthenixGivesBack campaign, which gives back to the community by donating its services to inspirational women. Now in its second year, the campaign saw a threefold increase in submissions this year for a total of nearly 10,000 nominees. Inspirational stories flood in as women support women, and friends nominate friends as the Inspirational Hero who should be the beneficiary of a cosmetic procedure donated by Athenix Body Sculpting Institute.

Kayla's journey has been peppered with trials and tribulations and a grand finale couldn't be better suited, harder worked for, or more deserved. Spurred on by the last of a small series of life-altering family events, which for Kayla represented "pretty much rock bottom," Kayla decided to start her weight loss journey and Keto diet. Two years later, she had shed 136 lbs, and taken her best friend, Amanda, along on the journey.

"We keep saying one day, one day. And that's the day that I made it Day One. I kind of had an awakening," Kayla shared with the campaign's founder, Athenix CEO James Haefner. "Life is good, I feel so good every day, but there's of course always this—you know, Amanda tells me all the time that the skin is like a badge; wear it like a badge, I'm so proud of it—and even though I know it's true and I preach that to other women, when you look in the mirror and that's what you see, it's not pretty," Kayla shared.

Hoping to rid herself of that excess skin, a year ago, Kayla had sought a consultation locally. "They couldn't do it financially," best friend Amanda shared, but she remained hopeful and positive. With Athenix Body Sculpting Institute's Give Back campaign, hope has paid off.

Through the #AthenixGivesBack campaign, Athenix donates services to both nominator and nominee, with the exact procedure being chosen after a personal consultation. Kayla will be undergoing a 360-degree tummy tuck, and Amanda will be getting a mommy makeover.

Renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Gavin Dry will perform the procedures. When USA Networks' Biggest Loser trainer Erica Lugo lost 160 lbs, it was Dr. Dry who operated to remove the 8½ lbs of skin that Lugo had lived with for five years. Lugo told PEOPLE magazine she has a "new body" and was "floored" at the difference.
