Veteran and Former NASA Astronaut to Kick-Off STEM Career Day

BALTIMORE - Nov. 12, 2020 - The BEYA Stars and Stripes Career Day is a digital interactive event that creates memorable moments for attendees. The event is aligned with national and state requirements and is led by retired Vice Admiral Walter Davis, USN (Ret.), a leading veteran in BEYA Stars and Stripes.

"According to the New York City Department of Education, career days like ours are important to expose students to a variety of careers and jobs by connecting them with business partners, provide a realistic picture of the workplace, help students make the connection between school and the workplace, and inform career planning. We are also in the business of helping to make more engineers for America," says Vice Admiral Walter J. Davis, USN (Ret).

Career Communications Group founder and CEO Dr. Tyrone Taborn will give the opening remarks at the BEYA Stars and Stripes Career Day K-12 virtual career day. Other speakers during the morning session include retired Navy Vice Admiral David L. Brewer, former superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The highlight of the interactive lunch at the event is a keynote address by Astronaut Charles Frank Bolden, Jr., former administrator of The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), who spent 34 years with the Marine Corps before retiring as a Major General. Dr. Cynthia Warrick, president of Stillman College, will address college as the bridge to a successful life. and high school mathematics teacher and engineer Vatrice Gibbs will also speak during the event.

The BEYA 2020 Stars and Stripes STEM Career Day will feature five panels:

Building a Foundation — Elementary students ages 7-10

Flexing Your Wings — Middle school students ages 10-14

Flying into a Career — High school students ages 14-18

Topics include engineering, healthcare, and computers. Target careers are Space, Engineering, Aerospace, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Bio-Medical.

Panel speakers include Brigadier General Velma Richardson (Ret), Dr. Cynthia Warrick, president, Stillman College, Brigadier General Allyson Solomon (Ret), Brigadier General David Turner (Ret), Rear Admiral Randy Mahr (Ret), Colonel AI Trimble (Ret), Dr. Crystal Bowman, Senior Executive Service (SES) member Renata Spinks, Dr. Kyla McMullen, Dr. Lisa Thompson, Dr. Donna Bell, global director, technology and features strategy and planning at Ford Motor Company, Dr. Kathy Delva, engineer Deepa, Navy Carrier Pilot Lieutenant commander (LCDR) Matt Bowman (Ret), and two professors from the U.S Naval Academy LCDR Yasmine Sauls and Lieutenant (LT) Yvette Armstrong.
