BELLEFONTE, Pa. - Sept. 18, 2020 - Actuated Medical, Inc. received a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase II $1M contract from the Department of Defense (DOD) for its "3D Printing of Flexible Polymers for Respiratory Protection."
The project focuses on developing custom-fit respirators suitable for soldiers and other DOD personnel who must wear respiratory protection continuously in "hot zones." Actuated Medical will continue its development of respirators that are comfortable enough for long-term use (8-12 hours or more) while still providing protection against Chemical Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) threats.
"Conventional manufacturing limits the features and ultimately comfort and function of respirators for long-term use," said Maureen L. Mulvihill, PhD, president and CEO of Actuated Medical. "Additive manufacturing [3D printing] is ideal for its customization ability."
In addition to military and DOD use, Actuated Medical intends to develop similar customizable respirators for healthcare and essential workers in response to COVID-19. These respirators will provide a more precise fit for the wearer so that they can wear for longer time periods. Potential applications for the technology include pediatric and sleep apnea patients, in which proper fit of respiratory devices is critical.
