MINNEAPOLIS - Sept. 10, 2020 - The Minnesota Technology Association (MnTech) is proud to announce the start of the 2021 SciTech Internship Program year. Since 2012, SciTech has successfully placed nearly 2,000 interns in 140 cities across Minnesota. The SciTech team is looking forward to securing at least 200 more internships in the year ahead.
Designed to build and retain Minnesota's STEM workforce, SciTech provides employers with a fifty percent wage match worth up to $2,500 per intern. At least 200 wage matches are available on a first come, first hire basis between now and August 31, 2021. To be eligible, businesses must have fewer than 250 employees worldwide.
"Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, more than 160 small Minnesota companies forged ahead with their internship plans and SciTech was there to support them, helping many students connect with small businesses across the state for valuable internship experiences in a safe and healthy environment," explained Jeff Tollefson, the President and CEO of MnTech. "Opportunities that might have been lost were reimagined. Students who participated in the program were granted unique learning experiences, many of which were conducted virtually, while small business employers gained support and exposure to the state's top STEM talent, strengthening their workforce. We're proud that that the SciTech Program continues to thrive and have a positive impact on students and employers."
"This is our third year with SciTech and it's been monumental," said Melissa Benda, HR Generalist at Houston Engineering in Thief River Falls. "We've had great success recruiting talent. It's sparsely populated out where we are so talent is harder to find. Having the cost partially covered, we can showcase what we can do here."
"SciTech and Schell's Brewery have provided me with an incredible, hands on lab experience," said Abby Kaluza, a biochemistry major at the College of St. Benedict and intern at August Schell Brewing Co in New Ulm. "I will be taking away so much knowledge and newly gained skills that I can continue applying in my coursework and future career."
SciTech is administered by the Minnesota Technology Association through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED).
