NEWBERRY, Fla. - May 11, 2020 - Central Florida businessman and civic leader Jamar Hebert will deliver a virtual commencement address to help the class of 2020 celebrate their achievements in a virtual forum during the era of social distancing. His address is focused on high school graduations taking place across the region, including predominantly African American communities.
Hebert is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and a current Floridian, residing with his family in the Gainesville, FL region, where he is a two-time recipient of the 40 Under 40 Award, most recently last year from The Gainesville Sun. He has served as a member of leadership in the telecommunications industry for the last 20 years, most recently as a Corporate Manager.
Hebert has served on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Alachua County and as a mentor in the Education Foundation's Take Stock in Kids program, among many other civic and volunteer activities. He is also the founding president of the 100 Black Men of Greater Florida GNV, Inc., focused on programs addressing education, health and wellness, mentoring, and financial empowerment for youth across the region.
Hebert's speech will deliver an aspirational message for graduates as they face the challenges of entering higher education and the workforce in the COVID-19 era, particularly young African American men. As He wrote in his prepared remarks, "We are in this together, class of 2020. And because we're in this together, it's falling to your generation to not just recover from this crisis, but to build a better, more fair society."
Hebert holds a B.S. in Business Management and wrote the highly praised self-help book, Dream It. Plan It. Do It: A Personal GPS for Everyday People in Pursuit of Extraordinary Dreams.
The virtual viewing will be held in partnership with two Central Florida student-centered organizations: Santa Fe College My Brother's Keeper and the Reichert House. The event is being held on the evening of May 13, 2020 and will be exclusively streaming on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram at 8:30 pm Eastern Standard Time/7:30 pm Central.
