ESRA Urges Congress to Support Digital Transactions Amidst COVID-19

WASHINGTON - May 1, 2020 - The Electronic Signature and Records Association (ESRA) continues its legislative advocacy for digital transactions with recent efforts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

ESRA contacted Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Chairwoman of the Financial Services Committee, regarding the strain the COVID-19 crisis puts on the legal and regulatory foundations of our e-sign and e-records systems. In the letter, ESRA urged Congress to consider steps to facilitate digital transactions which are vital to getting the benefits of the CARES legislation to the intended beneficiaries.

In a Coalition Letter to Congressional Leadership, ESRA joined with other trade associations to express strong support for the SECURE Notarization Act which would allow for the immediate nationwide use of RON technology. Remote Online Notarization (RON) laws allow businesses and consumers to execute critical documents with two-way audiovisual communication. The benefits of RON technology and legislation include permitting key financial transactions to take place virtually, decreasing risks associated with in-person meetings.

The benefits of digital transactions, including electronic records and electronic signatures, impact every industry. For these letters and more information on recent ESRA advocacy efforts regarding digital transactions, visit the ESRA website https://esignrecords.org/.
