May 01, 2020 - The newly re-formed Petersburg Republican Committee (PRC) will be having its first meeting of the year Wednesday, May 6th, 2020 at 7 pm via Zoom. This comes after electing its officers this past March to include re-electing Chairman Michael Maszaros, Treasurer Patrick Washington and Secretary JaVonni Brustow as well as electing our new Vice Chairman Steven Simonson. This meeting comes after spending 2019 assembling Republicans to form a GOP committee in the bluest city in the Commonwealth and participating in two local campaigns including Clerk of Court.
The committee is looking forward to a productive year as there is plenty of opportunity with 6 seats to be filled this year, 3 for City Council and 3 for 3 for School Board. Following years of a non-existent Republican presence in the city and breaking the notion of Petersburg being a Democrat stronghold, the PRC is working to change the political landscape in Petersburg. As for the strength of the Democrat Party, you don’t know how strong you are if you’ve never been challenged. And that will be the focus of the PRC this year, to provide this challenge to the status quo and to be the focal point of Republican activism within the city.
This is a crucial time in the city’s history as Petersburg had just begun to receive some positive news after falling into financial ruin in 2016 in spite of being the most dangerous city in Virginia breaking its record for annual shootings last year and having a school system that ranks at the bottom of the state. Now in dealing with covid19, other municipalities are experiencing financial trouble they haven’t seen in nearly 30 years so one can only imagine how Petersburg is doing. The current way of doing business here could make this a downward spiral much harder to escape. These are all things we seek to continue to address to the best of our ability while working with the other side of the aisle.
About the Petersburg Republican Committee: The PRC was created out of a void in accountability and political diversity in Petersburg, Virginia’s government and aims to bring common sense Conservatism, small government, and a focus on Capitalism to the city as well as being the center of Republican activism in the Cockade City.
