Calling All Fathers and Father Figures for a Virtual Challenge

MIAMI - April 30, 2020 - "Schools, teachers, fathers, male role models, and community members are encouraged to virtually join in the fun as we celebrate the important men in our children's lives on Fathers in Education Day," stated Holly Zwerling, CEO/President of the Fatherhood Task Force of South Florida (www.ftfsf.org) "Of course, health and safety come first. We encourage everyone to be creative while practicing appropriate social distancing," Zwerling emphasized.

Miami Dade County Public Schools is virtually celebrating the 7th https://youtu.be/RJJelOd6OuI annual Fathers in Education Day, April 30, 2020, by kicking off a Reading Challenge. Fathers and father figures are being asked to post a video or photo reading to their children with the hashtag #MDCPSFIECHALLENGE to their Instagram, Facebook, and other social media and encourage others to join in as well. M-DCPS Superintendent Alberto Carvalho stated, "One way to support your child is to read aloud together. Hearing your voice and observing you reading sets an example and creates a foundation for their success as students." Referring to a favorite book of his, Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson, Superintendent Carvalho demonstrated his passion for learning and being kind.

Caron Butler, former Miami Heat player, NBA champion and supporter of the #MDCPSFIECHALLENGE, https://youtu.be/yaAG2zgkZrE says he is now playing his biggest role since his retirement, being a Dad. He encourages dads to get involved in the Fathers in Education Day Challenge by sharing special moments with their children on their social platforms. "You can do multiple things—spend time with your kids and stress the importance of reading. Take advantage of this time," Butler said.
