University of Saint Katherine Graduate Receives Fulbright Research Award

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - April 6, 2020 - Recent USK graduate Elizabeth Kotar ('16) has received a Fulbright Research Award for research and advanced studies in Russia. Her research work will include collaboration with Professor Nikita Pokrovsky, Chair, Department of General Sociology at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow.

Kotar stated, "As a representative of the US, I am researching individual resilience in Russia and translating it into steps for community development." She continued, "The second half of the grant will also involve planning workshops, lectures and events that share my research and develop resilience on an international level for individuals and communities."

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs. Candidates submit a Statement of Grant Purpose defining activities to take place during one academic year in a participating country outside the U.S. Awardees are selected in a highly competitive process.

During their grants, Fulbrighters will meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing the grantee to gain an appreciation of others' viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think. Through engagement in the community, the individual will interact with their hosts on a one-to-one basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity, and intellectual freedom, thereby promoting mutual understanding.
