ATHENS, Greece - April 2, 2020 - COVID-19 has forever changed the world. Daily reports share stories of nations turned upside down by the coronavirus as they try to manage the pandemic. "Shelter in place" directives have many seeking ways to escape the fears and doubts that surround them and music has become such an escape. Independent singers, like Sonya Kosta, are taking the opportunity to reach a truly captive audience.
Sonya lives in Athens, Greece, (an area hit with over 1,400 cases and approximately 50 deaths due to COVID-19). Her latest song, "Wanna Wake Up", was released just weeks before the coronavirus became a world focus. Here are her thoughts surrounding its impact on her life and her world:
Question: How has this pandemic affected you?
Sonya: My life has drastically changed since a curfew was imposed to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Living in Greece, I shared my countries agony when news of the first victims surfaced. I particularly empathize with the neighboring countries of Italy and Spain who were hit harder.
The measures taken by the Greek state are harsh but essential. It may sound cliché but we are in this together. We need to be patient and endure. This is an opportunity to take care of each other. We need to be responsible by focusing on simple steps like washing our hands often, keeping social distances, and staying at home.
Question: What other thoughts do you have?
Sonya: The only way out of this crisis appears to be global solidarity, which involves exchanging crucial information that can prevent similar pandemics. A challenge seems to be avoiding excessive sacrifices of privacy and freedom in the effort to safeguard our health.
Also, I recently read an article explaining that Spain's hospitals have only a third of the beds, per capita than in other European countries. Such policies have led to inequalities in the ''EU's healthcare sector''. This is not the way to move forward in a continent that boasts of being the cradle of human rights and civilization. Change is necessary for equal access to healthcare, medical facilities, and equipment for all citizens across Europe and the world at large.
Question: How do you feel your music can help?
Sonya: My song is about a brand-new day free from worry. It evokes pictures of the era after this crisis when people will be free to pursue their dreams again. I want to use my art to help others overcome. I hope this ''brand new day'' will arrive soon.
