March 21, 2020 - Today, Alice Eduardo is not just a Woman of Steel, but also a Woman of Soul and Smiles. PeopleAsia, the glossy magazine chronicling inspiring stories from the movers and shakers of our society, took notice and awarded her as of 2020’s People of the Year.
More than building a city (with steel and all), her journey is about reaching the summit of dreams and basking in the view below. Then, deciding on which peak to conquer next. The top is a lonely place to be, so they say, with no one to share it with.
However, sharing is in Alice Eduardo’s DNA. A renowned philanthropist even earning a nod from Forbes Asia through its 2018 Heroes of Philanthropy, she only wants to be a businesswoman with a heart.
Alice Eduardo vows to live by Winton Churchill’s quote: “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.” No one’s quite a giver like her. It is said that she has already donated Php260 million to various charities in the Philippines.
One of her biggest charitable initiatives to date was the isolation ward for cancer-stricken children in Philippine General Hospital (PGH). Upon her subsequent visits, Alice Eduardo observed the condition of the families and carers of the children, particularly those from far-flung provinces, sleeping on the floors with cartons as mats. She proceeded to finance the construction of a dormitory, which would serve as the families’ home while in Metro Manila.
When super typhoon Yolanda swept the provinces in Eastern Visayas, specifically Tacloban, Leyte, she contributed by building 100 homes for the victims. She single-handedly financed the construction of these homes.
Alice Eduardo is no stranger to marrying her devotion and charitable efforts as well. She built the Php80 million structure to replace the small and old church in her hometown in Nueva Ecija. It now serves the 60,000 parishioners in the place. She also helped in the construction of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Taguig.
Her entrepreneurial spirit is also one keen in sharing her knowledge to posterity. Alice Eduardo believes in teaching others how to fish, not just giving them fish. She mentors young entrepreneurs at Go Negosyo, the Philippine Center of Entrepreneurship advocacy program.
Humility lives in her, vowing to bring with her anyone who has the same visions and struggles as her. If scraping their summit to achieve dreams is their desire, she’ll gladly help.
Alice Eduardo draws inspiration from the people around her. Smiles are her biggest weakness, however; this is more so the ones coming from her loved ones—parents, siblings, and children.
So much so for an ordinary person who was put into an excellent position to help other people. She said, “I’m taking that opportunity as a blessing.”
Indeed, Alice Eduardo is a gift ~wrapped in steel~ that keeps on giving.
