CoreTechnologie Automates Simplification of CAD Models for Digital Factory Planning

March 11, 2020 - Southfield, MI – In digital factory environments engineers very often face the challenge of overly detailed CAD models resulting in heavyweight data files preventing ease of handling in factory planning software tools. The new release of 3D_Evolution® Simplifier function, now automatically generates envelope geometry for all major digital factory planning tools. Due to the massive reduction in the number of elements, the Simplifier module enables accurate and fast processing of large CAD models.

3D_Evolution’s planning process software reads 3D formats such as CATIA, JT, CREO, NX, Solidworks, STEP and recently added DGN interfaces, without a CAD license. It automatically generates envelope geometries based on the exact, original model. The unique technology extracts the inner geometry of the models and creates an outer shell as a closed solid volume for conversion into CADx or factory planning systems (e.g. MicroStation, Process Simulate or PDMS). In addition to deleting the internal geometry, fonts, radio, and other unnecessary details, the user can also remove holes and replace with an embossed placeholder. The internal bodies can be identified and automatically deleted, thus, only bodies that are visible from the outside and relevant for the planning process, are retained. In all stages of reducing file size and conversion, the healing functions ensure that geometry errors in the CAD models are checked and cleaned up.

The new Simplifier function represents the next generation of digital factory planning, enabling even further simplification by creating minimal envelope bodies. Details such as energy chains, conveying systems, robot cells or special section tubes are replaced by envelopes, which after simplification, only contain a fraction of the original amount of data. The automatic process uses a multi-thread processing tool that can simplify giga-bytes of data in only hours, reducing the elements of typical assemblies with reduction in polygon count of up to 95 percent.

Additionally, CAD assembly structures can easily be converted into a functional product structure which is necessary for space planning and simulation. With just a few clicks, the user can disassemble or "flatten" the original assembly structure to merge the parts of the simplified model in a way that the subassemblies and bodies that belong together, are restructured in a new and now functional oriented assembly structure.
