CHARLESTON, S.C. - March 10, 2020 - Today Renee Anthony is the mom of two healthy, busy little boys, but it took years for her dream of being a mom to become a reality. She explains, "It was 7 years of trying. We were so blessed that we were able to start a family."

After years of trying, Anthony came to Dr. Stephanie Singleton at The Fertility Center of Charleston for help. It was quickly determined that endometriosis was preventing Anthony from conceiving. Explains Dr. Singleton, "Endometriosis is an often painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus — the endometrium — grows outside your uterus. It can affect the ovaries, the superficial tissues and contributes to infertility."

Endometriosis is a factor in up to forty five percent of infertility cases. For patients, not only does it take a toll physically, but emotionally as well. Says Anthony, "It was a painful reminder of how my body refused to do what it was designed to do…procreate. Month after month disappointment set in as we tried to have kids. After being diagnosed with endometriosis there was an answer tied to the reason."

Dr. Singleton recommends those struggling with endometriosis or with conceiving to schedule an initial consult. She explains," Come in earlier to have an evaluation. Some patients with endometriosis may increase their chances of pregnancy with conservative methods such as ovulation induction and intrauterine insemination, however, many women with endometriosis benefit from in vitro fertilization therapy."



March is National Endometriosis Awareness Month. Endometriosis most commonly involves the ovaries, bowel or the tissue lining of the pelvis. Rarely, endometrial tissue may spread beyond the pelvic region. The Fertility Center of Charleston will assess each patient who might suffer from endometriosis and formulate an individualized fertility treatment plan.
