The sale will feature exceptional artworks and antiques representing works from around the globe. From traditional Russian works to modern American paintings and more, the broad range of offerings in this auction shall intrigue collectors across many fields. A key highlight of this auction is lot 1, a work by Petr Geller (Russian, 1862-1933), "The Tsar Ivan IV and the Hermit Nicolas Salos," from 1894, estimated at $20,000-30,000. The work was created in 1894 and is among Geller's most famous works, depicting an episode of Ivan the Terrible's expedition to Pskov in 1570. The lot was exhibited at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904, after which it was frequently moved and eventually purchased by Oakland developer Franck C. Havens in 1912. It was then sold to the co-founder of San Francisco Chronicle, Michael Henry de Young, who in 1918 gifted the work to the organization that would become the M.H. de young Memorial Museum. Today Geller's work can be found in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and other museums around the world. Other highlights from day one are lot 24 by Nikolai Roerich, "Secrets of the Walls" 1920, estimated at $500,000-700,000, and lot 255, "An Impressive 28-piece Russian Gilt Silver Presentation Drinking Set," estimated at $250,000-350,000. Other high-profile artists will include David Shterenberg, Martiros Saryan, and Komar & Melamid.
The second day of Shapiro's auction, March 22nd, is focused on American, European, and Asian art and antiques. There are numerous highlights, including lot 607, an impressive Cartier citrine, onyx, silver, and diamond "Mystery Clock" circa 1970s, estimated at $200,000-300,000. American Art will be represented in part by the work of Raphael Soyer (American, 1899-1987), who is well regarded for his depiction of men and women as seen in contemporary settings. On offer from Soyer is lot 678, "Parting," circa 1943. This visually striking work is estimated at $3,000-5,000, and boasts an impressive provenance history. Other featured American artists include Richard Maury, Addison Thomas Miller, and many others.
