APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. - Feb. 27, 2020 - Students in Caerensa Klauss' fifth grade class became supercharged about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning while working with Dr. Nathan Johnson on a recent project.
Professor Johnson and a team of engineers from Arizona State University visited Desert Vista Elementary School, 3701 E Broadway Ave, and set up micro-grids to demonstrate how electricity is generated and tasked the students with the job of supplying power to a simulated town with a shortage.
"This was a very fun and hands-on way to get the students hyped about electrical circuits. Having the students work on simulated power grids can help create an excitement for learning. Working with members of higher education institutions will, hopefully, inspire and encourage our students to pursue passions through universities," said Ms. Klauss.
STEM education is based on teaching an integrated approach to apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts to learn about, and help solve, real-world issues.
Desert Vista is a Be Kind school where each day students and staff practice the 10 tenets that make a difference in the lives of others. Each day DVES students proudly share how they actively demonstrate their kindness to others by being respectful, being compassionate, or simply by being a friend!
