AUSTIN, Texas - Feb. 18, 2020 - San Antonio is well-known for its congested roads and highways. According to the TomTom Traffic Index, San Antonio drivers spent an average of 19% extra travel time in 2019 due to traffic congestion. As time on the road increases, the probability of a traffic accident occurring also increases.
Since 2010, there has been a 32% increase in motor vehicle accidents and a 21% increase in fatal accidents on San Antonio roads.
INCREASING POPULATION AND INCREASING TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN SAN ANTONIO
In 2018, the U.S. Census Bureau, estimated that about 1,432,233 people lived in San Antonio. As the population in San Antonio increases, so does the amount of both commuters and traffic, and ultimately, traffic accidents. In 2018 alone, the Texas Department of Transportation reported a total of 42, 043 crashes in San Antonio, and increased to over 53,000 in 2019.

WHO USES SAN ANTONIO'S ROADS?
Cars are not the only vehicles using San Antonio's expansive roadways. San Antonio roadways are used by all types of commuters, from large 18-wheeler trucks to motorcycles and pedestrians. Due to the high volume of commuters on San Antonio's roadways, car accidents have increased in frequency. Specifically, in 2019, there were 38,021 crashes involving commuter vehicles, 2,766 crashes involving trucks, 562 crashes involving motorcyclists, and 885 crashes involving pedestrians.
The most dangerous road for pedestrians in 2019 was Interstate 410, with 19 total accidents and 5 fatalities. In 2019, the most dangerous road for commuter vehicles was also Interstate 410, with 6,781 total accidents and 11 fatalities. The most dangerous road for trucks in 2019 was Interstate 10, with 437 total accidents and 1 fatality. Additionally, the most dangerous road for motorcyclists was Interstate 410, with 48 total accidents and 4 fatalities.
