December 24, 2019 - Dubai, UAE & Berwyn, USA - Expresso today announced the launch of an online portal which will enable the Expresso subscribers in Senegal to buy and add the airtime and data bundles to their prepaid account digitally and instantaneously at any time of the day. The portal has been developed and launched on Prepay Nation’s platform.
“Launch of the online top-up services is one more step towards our commitment for bringing convenience and value to our subscribers,” said Mustafa Abdelmalik, Director of Strategy and Digital Transformation at Expresso. “The portal is available not only to our subscribers in Senegal but is available globally and will benefit the roaming customers, who will be able to recharge their phones with airtime while travelling and stay connected, as well as the diaspora who often buy airtime as a gift for their friends and family back home,” added Abdelmalik.
About 5% of the population of Senegal, which is approx. 800,000 Senegalese, have immigrated to other countries and a majority of them are currently settled in France, Italy, Spain and the United States. The diaspora contributes $2.7B in remittances to Senegal’s economy every year, primarily in the form of financial assistance for the basic needs of their families. The remittances into Senegal increase multi fold during the religious holidays as it’s customary to give gifts to extended family members. Buying the airtime and data for the cellphone of family members is a popular gift as the credit becomes available instantaneously for use by the recipient.
The online top-up services launched by Expresso are expected to drive additional revenues for Expresso, while saving the money to its subscribers as they would not have to pay any extra processing fees, which is currently charged by third party online portals,” said Reka Bors, Vice President of EMEA of Prepay Nation based in Barcelona. “We are excited to offer Expresso’s subscribers and patrons the ability to top-up a mobile phone in real time from within Senegal and any international location using their credit, debit cards, Paypal account or other local electronic payment methods,” added Bors.
Expresso is the first Mobile Network operator in the Senegal to launch online top-up service and enable their customers to pay for airtime using credit cards. Besides Senegal, Expresso also operates a Mobile Network in 2 other African nations and it is expected that after the successful launch in Senegal, the online portal and the mobile app will be made available in other markets as well.
