PRINCETON, N.J. - Dec. 20, 2019 - Morven Museum & Garden's current exhibition, Dreaming of Utopia: Roosevelt, New Jersey, explores the history and culture of Roosevelt, NJ from an experimental immigrant utopia in the 1930's to present-day artist colony. The Prophetic Quest: Stained Glass Art of Jacob Landau with David Herrstrom
Wednesday, January 22 at 6:30 p.m., Jacob Landau's powerful ten-window stained glass art The Prophetic Quest will be discussed by David Herrstrom, President of the Jacob Landau Institute, in an illustrated lecture. Landau, an artist who lived most of his adult life in Roosevelt, NJ, is best known for his portrayal of the challenges of the 20th century including the Great Depression, WWII, Hiroshima and the Holocaust. Martin's Big Words Storytime
On Thursday, February 20 at 11:00 a.m, enjoy a reading of Doreen Rappaport's picture-book biography Martin's Big Words, an excellent introduction to learn about one of the world's most influential leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Many artistic references are made to Martin Luther King, Jr.'s accomplishments throughout the Roosevelt exhibition. Illustrator Bryan Collier paints an unforgettable portrait of a man whose dream changed America and the world forever. Roosevelt String Band Encore Concert: Songs to Warm the Heart
On Sunday, February 23 at 2:00 p.m. The Roosevelt String Band returns to Morven for an encore performance following their sold out appearance this fall. The February 23 event features songs to warm the heart including Bill Withers' Lean on Me, If Not for You and Make You Feel My Love by Bob Dylan, Carole King's You've Got a Friend, Tom Waits' Martha, and Michael Peter Smith's The Dutchman among many others for this two hour concert. The band features David Brahinsky on guitar and vocals, Guy DeRosa on harmonicas, Phil McCauliffe on bass, Noemi Bolton on various string instruments and vocals and Paul Prestopino, the sole member of the Roosevelt String Band still residing in Roosevelt, on string instruments and vocals. $10 General Admission; Free for Friends of Morven. Utopia, New Jersey: Travels in the Nearest Eden with Perdita Buchan
Wednesday, March 25, author Perdita Buchan of Utopia, New Jersey: Travels in the Nearest Eden, will explore eight New Jersey utopian communities with a focus on Roosevelt, New Jersey. Buchan's lecture will show how each colony left a legacy of much more than the buildings or street names that remain today—legacies that are inspiring, surprising, and often outright quirky. Offered at both 2:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in Morven's Stockton Education Center adjacent to the museum, doors open thirty minutes prior. Books are available for purchase in Museum Shop. The Houses of Louis Kahn
On Wednesday, April 1 at 6:30 p.m., The Houses of Louis Kahn co-authors George H. Marcus and William Whitaker will discuss one of the most important architects of the 20th century in an illustrated lecture. Louis Kahn (1901–1974) is widely admired for his great monumental works, including the Kimbell Art Museum, the Salk Institute, the National Assembly Complex in Bangladesh, as well as the houses he designed as a young architect in Roosevelt, NJ. Walking Roosevelt: Architecture, Murals, and More with Alan Mallach
On Sunday, April 5 at 11:00 a.m., walk through Roosevelt's historic streets and into some iconic buildings led by Alan Mallach, a senior fellow at the Center for Community Progress in Washington, DC. The tour begins at the Roosevelt Elementary School. Several original Roosevelt houses and other important sites will be visited. Following the tour, the group will stop at a local restaurant famous for its Sunday brunch. All attendees will also receive materials to further explore the town on their own. Earth Day 50th Anniversary Celebration: Roosevelt Poets Read
On Wednesday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m., celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day and Poetry Month with the Roosevelt Poets who will present readings, as they describe "from haiku to hypertext, lyrics to micrologues, dealing indigenous truth…" Poets include David Keller, Rod Tulloss, Wes Czyzewski, David Sten Herrstrom, Ron Kostar, Silent Lotus, and Judith McNally.
