NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Dec. 12, 2019 - Ateba Gaines, as a little girl, imagined becoming a superhero. As a child, her favorite superhero that she dreamed of becoming was Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's depiction of a heroine fighting injustice and seeking ways to solve a conflict led her to become a superhero as an adult; however, fighting injustice differently through social entrepreneurship. Ms. Gaines's heroine fight was domestic human trafficking, where she started a social enterprise called Shoe Revolt to raise funds by auctioning celebrity shoes. Many celebrity supporters donated personal artifacts, and memorabilia includes Sarah Jessica Parker, Lea Michele, Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg, Taylor Swift, Jada Smith, along with Shark Tank's Barbara Corcoran. She was a finalist in the Women Deliver Social Enterprise sponsored by Clinton Global Initiatives, Featured Innovator and Featured Change Maker by ABCs 14C Campaign, and featured on MTV, MTV Exit, and MTV Act.
Not only did Ms. Gaines gain national and international success in the field of social entrepreneurship. She is equally effective in the classroom. Her love for social entrepreneurship led her to start Unreasonable Kids to give other kids that dream of becoming a superhero an opportunity to change the world through social entrepreneurship education. Unreasonable Kids see opportunity where adults see problems.
Kid- monials:
Lisa, age 16 - "The biggest lesson I took from this course with Ms. Gaines was to be the change that our world needs. I already knew that there were many issues around us, but constantly I found myself being almost cynical and thinking there was not a way to fix these issues. However, attending this course, I was able to obtain skills, belief, and unreasonable thinking to give me hope that I could change the world."
Eli, age 11- "I enjoyed the Social Entrepreneurship for Tween camp because Ms. Gaines was enjoyable, and the subject of social entrepreneurship was fascinating. The TinkerCad designing was fun, too, and I enjoyed making my prototype and seeing it come to life. The software idea I came up with, I believe, is beneficial to solving the problem I selected. I think I have a real invention to bring to life in the making to help foreign language."
Upcoming, Ms. Gaines is offering the following opportunities for youth to become Unreasonable Kids:
