CHICAGO - Nov. 23, 2019 - Kat Direksyon Winery aims to raise $35,000 from a crowdfunding campaign that launches on December 2nd, 2019. The funds will help reduce the initial costs of buying equipment and building out the space for the winery/tasting room to be located on Chicago's South Side. Once the site opens in 2020, the winery exclusively makes a line of smooth, delicious, semi-sweet strawberry wines that celebrate four seasons of the year, but it will also offer grape-based wines from independent brands such as Abbey Creek, Maison Noir, and Black Feather.
The name Kat Direksyon is derived from Haitian Creole and commemorates Chicago's Haitian founder Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable. The wine itself is a tribute to the winery's founder's grandmother, Sophie Austin, who migrated from Vicksburg, MS to Chicago as a teenager in the 1920s. Later in her life, Ms. Austin made strawberry for family and friends to enjoy. The wines from Kat Direksyon are for the world to enjoy.
Kat Direksyon's wines have been in development for over 3-1/2 years and have been sampled at events like Chicago's River North Wine Fest and the Junior League of Chicago's Perfect Pairings by over 4,000 people during that time.
So often with urban renewal, investment follows displacement. Therefore, the decision to place Kat Direksyon Winery in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood is seen by the company's founder as an investment in his neighbors, their strengths, and their phenomenal value.
Bringing this vision to life will be accomplished with the help of many people including California-based winery consultant Genevieve Rogers and Washington, DC-based design company Smith & Crane LLC.
The crowdfunding campaign will remain live for a month and offer perks for donations of $25 and above including chocolates from Haitian-based Askanya Chocolates. There will be bonus perks for those that help Kat Direksyon the $20,000 milestone. For those that invest over $500 will get a chance to choose from a range of experiences including the winery's grand opening with Chef Stephan Durand.
