Insurance Navy Brokers Shares The Do's And Don'ts Of Halloween

CHICAGO - Oct. 30, 2019 - Halloween is the spookiest time of the year and not just for the costumes and scary stories. The candy filled holiday also poses safety concerns ranging from food allergies to accidental house fires. Insurance Navy wants to remind the public of a few simple things they can do to prevent accidents or harm to themselves or their home.

Statistically speaking, the largest portion of injury around Halloween comes from botched pumpkin carving attempts, followed by trips and slips while walking in costume.

Trips and falls are common injuries because it is difficult to see out of masks or other costume pieces. If your yard decorations require wires or being tied down, keep them out of walking paths so people do not trip. Additionally, if you plan on hanging decorations make sure they are high up enough to not accidentally bump someone's head. Please use caution when putting up or taking down decorations, as falling off ladders is a common injury as well.

If you plan on or already are using decorative lights or animatronics, make sure to take the right precautions. Do not plug all the decorations or animatronics into a single extension cord. Even with a circuit breaker, an overloaded outlet can knock power out or possibly start a fire. Additional fire hazards include candles placed around the house or inside jack-o-lanterns. Prevent insurance claims on November 1st by using battery-operated lights.

Insurance Navy would like to remind everyone that some children have allergies to certain foods. Statistics show that 1 in 13 children have a food allergy, and on Halloween, the chances of running into a child with an allergy increase. Some people have opted out of giving out candy, and instead, give non-food items. Some examples include glow sticks, money, or inexpensive toys.
