Hard disk drives are used in nearly all computers, as well as many other electronic devices, to store data. The following report examines the global hard disk drives market and where it's headed.
Hard disk drives been around for over a half-century. Also known as a fixed disk, a hard disk drive an electronic and mechanical device that's used to store data. It features one or more metallic discs, known as platters, that are coated with a magnetic finish. Hard disk drives also feature a magnetic arm that moves over these platters to store, as well as read, data.
Some people assume that hard disk drives are a relatively new invention, but this isn't necessarily true. They've actually been around since the 1950s, during which the world's first hard disk drive was invented by IBM. Back then, hard disk drives weren't particularly fast, nor were they able to store large amounts of data. In the decades to follow, however, manufacturers have vastly improved the performance of their hard disk drives.
Today, some hard disk drives are able to store over 1 TB of data. To put that number into perspective, a 1 TB hard disk drive can hold about one-quarter of a million MP3 files. Some hard disk drives can even store over twice this amount of data.
There are still challenges facing hard disk drives, however. The biggest challenge is the rise of solid-state drives (SSDs). Like hard disk drives, SSDs are able to store, as well as read, data. The difference, however, is that SSDs don't have any moving parts, thereby making them faster than their hard disk drive counterparts. Research shows SSDs are anywhere from five to 20 times faster than hard disk drives. The downside, however, is that they are significantly more expensive. For business owners and consumers who are on a budget, hard disk drives may be a smart choice for this reason alone.
