JMA Pilani Celebrates UN International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

The ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun, thus helping preserve life on the planet. The power packed message for the day from United Nations Secretary General António Guterres says "As we rightly focus our energies on tackling climate change, we must be careful not to neglect the ozone layer and stay alert to the threat posed by the illegal use of ozone-depleting gases."

Most ozone resides high up in the atmosphere, between 10 and 40 km above Earth's surface. This region is called the stratosphere and it contains about 90% of all the ozone in the atmosphere. Ozone in the stratosphere absorbs some of the Sun’s biologically harmful ultraviolet radiation. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1995 was awarded jointly to Paul J. Crutzen, Mario J. Molina (Chemical Engineer) and F. Sherwood Rowland for their work in atmospheric chemistry, particularly concerning the formation and decomposition of ozone."

The phase-out of controlled uses of Ozone Depleting Substances ODS and the related reductions have not only helped protect the ozone layer for this and future generations. On 19 December 1994, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed 16 September every year to be observed as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer to commemorate the same date in 1987, on which the Montreal Protocol on ODS was signed. Aptly, the Theme for the day in 2019 is: 32 Years and Healing.

ODS are widely used in refrigerators, air-conditioners, fire extinguishers, in dry cleaning, as solvents for cleaning electronic equipment and as agricultural fumigants. Some of the top ranking ODS in India today are ChloroFluoroCarbons (CFCs), Halon, Carbon Tetrachloride, Methyl Chloroform, Methyl Bromide, Hydro Bromo Fluoro Carbons (HBFCs), Hydro Chloro Fluoro Carbons (HCFCs), Bromo Chloro Methane (BCM). HCFCs are both ozone-depleting substances and powerful greenhouse gases: the most commonly used HCFC is nearly 2,000 times more potent than carbon dioxide in adding to global warming.
