Documentary Film "Harlem School 1970" by Phil Gries Reviewed on the GingerNewYork TV Show

NEW YORK - Aug. 17, 2019 - HARLEM SCHOOL 1970: is the only known feature length documentary filmed inside a public inner city elementary school during the 1960's, 1970's or 1980's in the USA.

Almost a half century since it was produced independently by documentary cinematographer Phil Gries, a surviving original 16mm print has been located, digitized, re-edited and restored for presentation. Without narration or interviews this early example of 'direct cinema' documentary reveals a conventional 'day in the life' of Community School 30, during its first school year of operation (Sept. 1969-June 1970), from early morning arrival to dismissal time. The film's focus is on the students (grades K through 4), including teachers, faculty, para professionals, parents and employees.

What unfolds is an historic journey back in time, viewing and listening to a variety of daily structured revealing activities...the rhymes / songs that children sing, their games, colloquial language, conflicts, the daily repetitive routines of students and teachers encountered during class time, lunch and recess. It appears to be an exhaustive environment for all with much energy expended.

Filmed in the Spring of 1970, what emerges is a peerless time capsule where inner city children constantly interact daily with adult & peer pressure scenarios, during an uncertain and challenging exploratory time in their lives.
