How To Get Into Copywriting - Personal Story

NEW YORK -- I remember when I started dabbling in copywriting books to get a feel of what it was and if i wanted to pursue it as a career. Once I devoured all the books I could find, it was time I practice what I read, and use real world experience to test my knowledge and my dedication to the field of copywriting.

How to get into copywriting as an amateur was difficult at first I have to admit. It seemed that no one had faith in me as much as I did. I remember doing what perhaps many amateur writers and copywriters alike do at first. I signed up to freelance websites to find myself clients.

It seemed like a cattle call in my opinion at first, with so many applicants competing for the same projects. Some bids were tremendously high, and many more extremely low. How could I compete with so many people, and then to top it all off they were willing to work for peanuts, which in my opinion only bring in monkeys.

As a person trying to get my feet wet, I knew I had to get started somehow, even if the pay was low, and the assignments were in my opinion not as exciting. So, I sucked it up and applied to as many projects as I could. After a few weeks of trial and error I came up with a system that was getting me noticed by perspective clients.

I carefully screened my prospective clients, and made sure that when I wrote a proposal to them I was personalizing each one to them and not copy and pasting a proposal from a template found online. To my amazement, the first time I tried a personalize approach I was contacted by the client, who seemed interested. We spoke back in forth a few times, until I mentioned my rates. That's when they disappeared.

At that time it was very discouraging, but now I can honestly laugh it off, because I knew my bid was low, but if they wanted lower, then they had to move on to another contractor. I couldn't work for pennies, especially living in New York City. After a few more personalized emails, I was able to attract a few clients to discuss their projects one on one.

I was getting a boost of self-esteem and knew deep down that bidding was a numbers game, but personalization was the only way I was going to get noticed from the vast amount of writers bidding for the same jobs as I.

After about a month had gone by when I got hired for my first project. It was a big accomplishment for me, because I fought hard, and made sure I didn't give up, which I assume many others did. Overall, my experience in trying to get into copywriting was the best learning experience I could ask for. Without real world experience, I would have never truly known what I was up against and what will work or not.

So, my suggestion to new and aspiring copywriters... if you want to know how to get into copywriting, you need to study first, and then put yourself out there and offer your services. At first it will be a struggle, but in the long run, you will master your skills in writing and obtaining clients, and then it will became second nature to you.

So, go ahead and get started!
