Sharing a file now is made easier via the following steps:
1. Connect the computers by:
Method A: Using a Crossover Cable to connect both computers
Resources needed:
Network cards installed in both computers
1 Crossover Ethernet cable
If network cards are already installed in each computer, connect the two computers by attaching one end of the crossover Ethernet cable from one computer and the other end to the second computer.
Method B: Using a Hub to connect both computers
Resources needed:
Network cards installed in all computers
2 or more normal Ethernet cables
If network cards are already installed in all computers, connect both computers to the hub by attaching one end of the Ethernet cable from the network card to the hub.
Method C: Using a Router to connect both computers
Resources needed:
Network cards installed in all computers
2 or more normal Ethernet cables
DSL modem provided by your ISP and a working high speed service
A router, can either be wireless or wired that is bridged to the cable modem.
If network cards are already installed in all computers, connect both computers to the router by attaching one end of the Ethernet cable from the network card to the router. Once done with attaching the Ethernet cables, connect to your high-speed Internet service using your router's GUI, usually by entering 192.168.1.1 on the address bar of your Internet browser.
2. Once done connecting your computers by any of the given methods above, in each one of your computers, highlight the icon for My Computer and click properties to go to your computer's System Properties.
In your computer's System Properties window, click the tab for Computer Name and write the computer description in a piece of paper. Do this step on all computers.
3. Select a file or folder that you want to share and highlight it.
Using your mouse, right click on the file and hit the option for Sharing and Security and under the Sharing tab, tick the checkboxes beside Share this folder on the network and Allow network users to change my files, which was previously grayed out.
4. Navigate to your computer's My Computer and on the address bar, either by clicking the address bar or by pressing F4 on your keyboard.
Type in \\ and the name of your other computer, for example, if the other computer is named laptop, then type \\laptop on the address bar.
5. You are now able to share files between computers.
If you have other folders you'd like to share, simply do steps 3 to 4 on those folders, or you can drag the files you'd like to share to the existing folder that you chose to share on the network.
Sharing files between computers, this way is much cheaper and easier to do rather than burning a disk or using a USB flash drive to transfer files from one computer to the other.
Quick Tips:Transferring files via wired connection is safer and faster versus using a wireless connection.
