How to connecte two switches by fiber. I am looking at the 48 port Cisco 2960 switch http://www.3anetwork.com/cisco-catalyst-2960-switches-price_c39 WS-2960G-48TC-L to put in our server room, and I need to connect it to a 24 port switch about 450 feet (about 140 meters) away in another part of the building.
The option from TechSoup for the 24 port switch I’m looking at is the WS-C2960-24-TT-L, which is a 10/100 switch with two 10/100/1000 uplink ports.
The options for transceivers include the GLC-SX-MM, and the GLC-FE-100FX. Both of these are described as “hot-swappable input/output devices plug into a Gigabit (or Fast Ethernet) port or slot, linking the port with the network.”
I don’t see the 24 port WS-C2960-24-TT-L on the Cisco compatibility matrix for these transceivers, but it sounds like I should be able to plug them into one of the 10/100/1000 uplink ports and connect it to the fiber.
So my question is will one of these transceivers work with that switch or do I need to choose a different switch? My only other choices from techsoup are a 24 port GB switch, or a 24 port POE 10/100 switch, both of which are listed on the compatibility matrix, but both are more expensive and I don’t need GB or POE on that remote switch.
Solution:
There are SFP ports and then their are older style GBIC ports. The SFP and GBIC ports allow you to plug in various types of fiber connectors like the kind you mentioned.
So in order to use a SFP or GBIC transceiver you will need a switch that has those ports available. The switch you have simply has rj-45 style copper gigabit ports.
So really their description that you described is wrong. In that example one of them was a gigabit fiber transceiver and the other one that was mentioned was a 100base fiber transceiver, but in both cases that SFP transceiver needs to plug into an sfp slot.
