New Study Shows Plastics in the Ocean Will Soon Outweigh Fish

According to a new report put out by the World Economic Forum, the amount of plastic in oceans will outweigh the fish in a short 34 years. The report goes on to say that the latest research shows there are more than 165 million tons of plastics in the ocean today and if people continue at the current rate, there will be 1.1 tons of plastic for every ton of fish by 2025, and by 2050, the plastic will outweigh the fish.

€œThis simply isn't necessary," says an industry insider who markets reusable shopping bags in an effort to educate people on the damage plastic bags cause to the environment. €œPlastic bags make up a huge portion of the plastic in the oceans and they not only pollute the environment, but they cause injury or even death to the wildlife. And that's a shame because the solution is so easy."

He's talking about using [reusable shopping bags](http://www.amazon.com/Pop-Designs-Veggie-Shopping-Variety/dp/B014EG7EHW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446588598&sr=8-1&keywords=shopping+bags) as an alternative, and although many states have or are in the process of banning retailers from providing the offending bags, millions of consumers still use them.

But if lawmakers have the last word, consumers won't have the choice of using plastic bags for long. To date, about 2 million plastic bags are used every single minute in the world, which is why they will soon outweigh the fish in the oceans. In fact, the United Nations says that 10 percent of plastics end up in the oceans and 70 percent of that on the ocean floor where it will never degrade. But as more and more cities implement plastic bag bans, there will be fewer plastics taking up space in the ocean.

And that's important because, currently, about 90 percent of those plastic bags aren't sent to recycling centers because the cost is too high. So they end up in landfills and oceans, creating a problem for future generations.

€œI believe that if people only understood how simple it was to solve this problem, every single person would carry reusable shopping bags in an effort to do their part," says the spokesman.

And it's true. [Reusable bags](http://www.lapopdesigns.com/) are fun to buy, easy to carry, and they offer a simple solution for a potentially devastating environmental issue.
